Panther Valley grads shine in college swim championships

Five Panther Valley High School graduates came up with outstanding performances in their respective conference swim championships recently.

East Stroudsburg University sophomore Karoline Vavra set an individual record (100 free) at the PSAC Championships on Sunday and was also a member of the record setting 800 free relay team.ESU had four swimmers make consolation finals on Sunday, and the 800 free relay of Karoline Vavra, sophomore Mara Palazzari, senior Kimberly Lawson and junior Andrea Tremper was eighth in 3:33.70, breaking their record of 3:35.30 set last year.Coy was ninth in the 200 breast in 2:24.59, breaking the school record set by senior Sami Vavra (2:25.95), Karoline's sister, in the prelims. Vavra was 12th in the consolation final in 2:26.16.Karoline Vavra broke her own 100 free record with a time of 53.18 in the prelims. She clocked 53.62 in the consolation finals and was 16th in both sessions. She had the previous record of 53.48 last year.ESU swimmers set six individual and four relay records over the weekend, including Sami Vavra in the 100 breast and Karoline Vavra in the 100 free.Sami Vavra was one of two warriors who made the championship finals. She was fifth in the 100 breast. Vavra was eighth in the 100 breast last year.Sami Vavra (100 breast, 200 breast) scored in two individual events, while Karoline scored in the 100 free.The Warrior women finished in ninth place, which was their best performance since the 2001-02 season.At the MAC Championships, Junior Tricia Janowiak and sophomore Lauren Cormier helped lead the Lady Lions to the championship.Janowiak finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.07), third in the 50 freestyle (24.87) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (54.69). She was also part of four relay teams. Three finished second (200 freestyle, 1:39.91, 200 medley, 1:49.67 and 400 freestyle, 3:38.64) and one finished third (the 400 medley, 4:03.30).Cormier, was second in both the 100 (1:07.41) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.70) events, and joined Janowiak on the second-place 200 freestyle (1:39.91), 200 medley (1:49.67) and 400 freestyle (3:38.64) relay teams. Cormier was also 12th in the 200 IM (2:19.15).Another former Panther, Lexi Follweiler, helped the Lycoming women finished fifth at the MAC ChampionshipsThe sophomore swam on the fifth-place 400 medley (4:10.43) and 400 free (3:46.60) relay teams. She finished seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:19.58) and was part of the seventh-place 200 free (1:43.47) and 800 free (8:20.46) relay teams. Follweiler also finished 10th in the individual 100 butterfly (1:02.31) and 14th in the 200 IM (2:20.58).
