Man who threatened to jump from Lansford roof top facing charges
Brian Kukowski, 35, whose last known address is 9 Oak St., Lansford, faces charges of five counts of recklessly endangering another person, resisting arrest, persistent disorderly conduct and public drunkenness stemming from an incident that happened on April 18, 2013.
According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Officer Joshua Tom with District Judge Casimir Kosciolek, here's what happened:At 11:30 a.m. that day, Tom received confirmation of an active warrant on Kukowski by the Schuylkill County Adult probation office. Minutes later, he spotted Kukowski hanging out by his uncle's business on East Patterson Street, but when he returned, Kukowski had left.Later, he learned Kukowski had been seen on the roof of the business. He went to the police station, which offered a clear view of the store, and watched Kukowski "attempting to sneak around" and "checking the streets" for police.Kukowski was "sneaking back and forth" from the side of the store that faces East Patterson Street to the side that faces East Ridge Street.Tom began to gather more officers and alerted Chief John Turcmanovich and Sgt. Jack Soberick. He also contacted Kukowski's uncle, who manages the property and who helped police get to the roof. Once up there, police saw that he was still at a higher point and could be reached without a ladder.Tom and Officer Brian Horos talked with Kukowski, asking him to come down and turn himself in, but Kukowski refused.Kukowski drank "beer after beer" and screamed that he would jump rather than return to jail. He continued to drink beer, and screamed at police that he would jump if they "tried anything."While Horos talked with Kukowski, Tom gathered with other officers. They shut down east Ridge and Patterson streets, the town's heavily traveled business district, near the store. Nesquehoning Police Chief Sean Smith arrived to help talk him down, but Kukowski refused.Turcmanovich decided to call in a special team from the Salisbury Township police department, which arrived 45 minutes later and devised a plan to get Kukowski safely off the roof.Kukowski ran toward the edge of the roof, the team fired "less than lethal" projectiles at him, knocking him down while he was still away from the edge. He continued to struggle against arrest, but was eventually handcuffed.Police took him to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, and Kukowski told medical staff he wanted to kill himself. He was committed for a psychological evaluation. An officer from the Schuylkill probation department went to the hospital to serve the warrant.
