Tamaqua to apply for grants

Tamaqua will file applications for Local Share Account grants on behalf of two emergency response agencies.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Tamaqua Borough Council approved filing for an LSA grant for $111,695 on behalf of the Tamaqua Community Ambulance Association. If approved, the grant would be used for a new emergency vehicle.

The resolution passed unanimously.

Council also will apply for a grant on behalf of the South Ward Fire Company. The company is requesting $52,200 to resurface its driveway and parking lot.

The resolution passed; however, council members Robert Amentler, Ron Bowman and George Haldeman — all members of the South Ward — abstained from the vote.

The LSA grant program distributes gaming revenues to public interest, infrastructure and community improvement projects and is administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Last month, council approved applying for a $1 million grant on behalf of the American Hose Fire Company No. 1. It would help fund construction of a new garage to store firefighting equipment and vehicles.
