Palmerton Hungarian Club donates $18K to nonprofits

The Palmerton Hungarian Club donated $18,000 recently to nine area nonprofit organizations. Each organization received $2,000.

Those that received donations were Caring DAM Hearts in Slatington; Palmerton Area Library; Joel Huntzinger Memorial; Aquashicola Fire Company; Valor House; Christian Action Council of Palmerton Area Churches; Palmerton Memorial Park Association; Palmerton Police Department; and Palmerton United Veterans Organization.

The Hungarian club donates profits from its small game of skills licensing offering pull tab, bingo and fishbowl tickets, according to Raquel Serfass-Lutton, board member of Palmerton Hungarian Club.

Additionally, Serfass-Lutton said that each month the club donates a few hundred dollars to other organizations in the community including sports teams, fishing contests, veterans, Santa lists, food pantries and more.

“As a club we are fortunate to have generous members, and an auxiliary volunteering time to hold small chance games,” Serfass-Lutton said. “We have a very tight board of directors and staff agreeing that supporting the community is a necessity.”

Serfass-Lutton noted that on Oct. 13, the state enforced the removal of the electronic skills game machines.

“The revenues those machines provide supplement our ability to award donations,” she said. “Unfortunately, since the state skills machines have been removed we will not be able to support the community as much as we have been.”

The Palmerton Hungarian Club is located at 317 Lehigh Ave., Palmerton.

There are six bowling lanes for league and recreational use, and the club is always accepting new members.
