Schuylkill County hosts walks in local forests
Several Walk in Penn’s Woods events will be held throughout Schuylkill County in early October.
Walk in Penn’s Woods is a statewide coordinated event that encourages all to learn how their local woods work, see forests in new ways, and appreciate and love the forests so that they will be cared for.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, a walking tour of the trees at Penn State Schuylkill Campus in Schuylkill Haven will be held. Join campus tree advocates to see the trees and arboretum and learn how they provide solace, beauty and important benefits to humans and wildlife. Spend as much time as you wish. Contact Mary Ann at 570-702-6618 or mvs14@psu.edu for more information.
From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, a walking tour of Steve Delp’s woodlands at 151 Wild Cherry Road, Schuylkill Haven, will be offered. The former abandoned dairy farm has been transformed into a thriving forest. Delp, a member of the American Chestnut Foundation, planted the fields with a wide variety of tree species. Delp’s property includes chestnut plantings and plantations that are being used in research to develop blight-resistant American chestnut trees for future reforestation efforts throughout the county. For more information, call Frank at 570-449-4239.
From 3-5 p.m. Sunday, explore a woodland in progress at 254 Red Church Road, Auburn. The tour will highlight the continued progress made to control stilt grass and other invasive plants to transform the property into a self-sustaining food forest. Goats and chickens play an important role in the stewardship of this unique property. For more information, call George at 570-691-8865.
From 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 10, take a walk at the property of Barry Palmer at 520 Bear Creek Road, Schuylkill Haven. An avid hunter and wildlife enthusiast, Palmer enjoys observing the deer and bear that frequently visit his property. A special part of the tour will be an opportunity to learn about his beekeeping efforts. For more information, call Frank at 570-449-4239.
