A Saylorsburg man is accused of firing two shots at his girlfriend when she tried to collect her belongings from his Ross Township home.

According to Pennsylvania State Police at the Lehighton barracks, troopers were dispatched around 10:21 p.m. Thursday to a residence in the 100 block of Singer Court for a reported domestic incident.

The woman told police she had argued earlier in the evening with her boyfriend, Erwin Schoenhaar, 54. She had been spending time with a friend in a camper on the property.

When she later went to Schoenhaar’s home to retrieve her belongings, she knocked on the door. Police said Schoenhaar opened the door and fired two shots in her direction.

The woman told troopers she did not know what type of gun was used but was aware that Schoenhaar owned a shotgun. She remained outside and called 911.

Police said the woman also reported seeing a shotgun and two other firearms inside the home in the past.

Investigators determined Schoenhaar had an active warrant from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office for failing to appear in court on a previous DUI charge. Police also said he was subject to an active protection-from-abuse order in New Jersey, which prohibited him from possessing firearms.

Police repeatedly ordered Schoenhaar to come outside, but he remained inside the residence. A perimeter was established and members of the State Police Special Emergency Response Team entered the home, eventually finding him hiding in a crawl space beneath the residence.

After being taken into custody early Friday morning, Schoenhaar told police he hid because he knew he had an outstanding warrant, according to court documents.

Police said Schoenhaar denied firing a weapon and claimed any gunshot residue on his hands would have come from using a concrete nail gun the previous day.

During a search of the home, investigators recovered a Walther PK .380 pistol with a laser sight, a Springfield XD .357 pistol with a laser sight and ammunition. Police also seized Schoenhaar’s cellphone and a digital video recorder from the property’s surveillance system as part of the investigation.

Schoenhaar is charged with aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm, terroristic threats, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and flight to avoid apprehension.

He remains in Monroe County Correctional Facility after being denied bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday before District Judge Colleen Mancuso in Brodheadsville.
