A Philadelphia man accused of crashing his vehicle into a Port Carbon day care center will face charges in Schuylkill County Court.

John M. Capobianco Jr. crashed into the Little Sunshines day care center in Port Carbon on June 29, according to State Police Officer Nicholas L. Witman from the Schuylkill Haven barracks.

None of the children or adults who were in the building were hurt.

Capobianco, 55, had a preliminary hearing Tuesday before District Judge M. Edward Lewis, Port Carbon.

Lewis found sufficient evidence to advance the charges, which include a felony count of causing a catastrophe, to county court.

Also advanced were the following misdemeanors: 26 counts of reckless endangerment and one count each of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, first offense; possession of a small amount of marijuana; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The following summary charges also were advanced: two counts of displaying fictitious/stolen inspection stickers and one count each of careless driving; reckless driving; speeding; disregarding traffic lanes; failing to carry registration; registration card not signed; investigation by officer/duty of officer; and driving without insurance.

Capobianco, who was represented by attorney Jeremy-Evan Alva, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, remains in Schuylkill County Prison in lieu of $150,000 cash bail.

According to court documents, Capobianco was speeding around 8:30 a.m. on East Washington Street when he lost control of his SUV, which went airborne and crashed through concrete bollards and into the day care’s kitchen.

There were 22 children and four adult caregivers inside the day care at the time.
