A special meeting of Summit Hill Borough Council will be held Tuesday in the borough hall to fill a vacant seat and to reorganize.

The meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m., is being held in place of the regular monthly meeting. The August regular meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 27.

The vacancy, as well as the need to reorganize, was caused by the death of then council president David Wargo on June 8.

Wargo, who had been elected four times to the council, had been the president the past two years.

Joseph Weber, vice president of the council, has been acting as president the past several months because of Wargo’s illness.

Any resident wishing to apply to serve on council should submit a letter at the borough hall no later than 4 p.m. Tuesday.

In other news from a recent council meeting:

• The council received a letter from Jack Soberick, a member of Lansford Borough Council, requesting a meeting of the two borough councils to discuss potential regionalization of the police departments.

Weber said, “Whether we’re for or against it, I think it’s something we’ve got to explore.”

Such a meeting likely will occur in September or October.

• The council agreed to allow the Knights of Columbus to hold a “Dog Day in the Park” on Aug. 23, in Ludlow Park. This is the second year for the event.

• The relining of sewer pipes is occurring within the borough. It’s part of an upgrade of the sewerage system in the three towns of Lansford, Coaldale and Summit Hill, all members of the tri-borough Sewer Authority.

Council member Marlene Basiago said 8,000 square feet of lining is permitted under the project. If more work is required, the borough will have to pay for it.

• Basiago said the Coaldale-Lansford-Summit Hill Sewer Authority has moved its office to the former Evans Coal and Fuel Oil Garage in the borough. It previously had its office on West Patterson Street in Lansford.

• A letter from the Summit Hill Historical Society said there will be a concert by vocalist Jay Smar from 6 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 23.
