The Valley Royale Open is once again combining competition with community support.

The annual tennis tournament, which benefits the Valley Royale Foundation, opened last weekend with its doubles competition and raised $700 despite rain washing out Saturday’s action.

The tournament features a unique format in which the champion receives 50 percent of the total entry fee pool, while the remaining 50 percent is donated to the Valley Royale Foundation, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Players from Carbon County, the Lehigh Valley, Stroudsburg, Scranton and Quakertown competed in the doubles event.

Gavin Labbadia and Roman Farhad captured the men’s doubles title, while Tea Amerise and Kathy Zanon won the women’s doubles championship.

The Valley Royale Open concludes this weekend with its singles tournament. The men’s draw is full, while limited openings remain in the women’s field. Organizers expect the event to raise an additional $800, bringing the tournament’s total fundraising effort to approximately $1,500.

Proceeds from the tournament will help fund the remaining weeks of the Valley Royale Foundation Kids Tennis Camp, which hosts nearly 50 children each Wednesday morning.
