A Sweet spot in Summit Hill

Bakery is a lifelong dream for Andrea Delacruz

July Fourth certainly seemed like the appropriate day for the grand opening of a new bakery in Summit Hill, Delacruz Delites.

July 4, 1776, presented a great new beginning.

For Andrea Delacruz, the owner, it also was the fulfillment of “a lifelong dream.”

Delacruz Bakery held a ribbon cutting on the morning of last Saturday at 125 E. White St., with Angela and 7-year-old son Logan doing the honors.

Several dozen people attended the opening, including Summit Hill Mayor Karen Ruzicka, members of borough council, and various other borough officials.

Delacruz said initially the bakery’s opening hours will be Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday from 3-8 p.m.

Among the inventory at the store were, in the words of Delacruz, “a little bit of everything.” That includes muffins, cake slides, whoopie pies, cupcakes, cookies, Tandy Cakes, dessert cups and bagels.

The owner said she also bakes cakes for special occasions, including weddings.

The 1998 Marian Catholic High School graduate said, “I’ve been baking since I was in high school,” adding that she often baked for fundraisers for nonprofits as well as for friends and family.

“I like decorating cakes, bringing somebody’s vision of decoration to life,” she said, adding she has more than 35 years of experience in cake decorating.

Present for the opening besides Andrea and Logan were her husband, Anthony, and their son and daughter-in-law, Austin and Emily Buyce. Another son, Thomas Buyce, was unable to be present because of his work schedule.

“Everything is baked on the premises,” Andrea said.

The bakery is located in the building formerly housing S&O Computers. S&O Computers only has commercial customers, so it closed its walk-in shop. The portion of structure where the bakery exists has been totally renovated.

Delacruz said that eventually she will invite customers to share traditional recipes for her to try. “I would make the items and try them and give them (the customer) the full credit,” she said.

She stressed that she is trying to stick with more traditional desserts.

Ruzicka said, “We are very excited to welcome Andrea, her family and Delacruz Delites to our community.”

Joseph Weber, vice president of borough council, said, “I think it’s great for any small town to have small businesses. We wish them luck. It’s always a tough road.”

“A custom bakery, it’s a perfect fit,” Weber said. “I hope residents of this town can support Delacruz (Delites) as well as other businesses in town.”

He said he was “overwhelmed” by the turnout for the opening.

Weber recalled how the late David Wargo, who was president of borough council, who died June 8, pushed for economic development and entrepreneurship in the town.

Of economic progress, Weber quoted Wargo as saying: “I know it can happen. It’s just a matter of time.”

Kira Steber, secretary/treasurer of borough council, is a lifelong resident of the borough and said that at one time the building housed O’Donnell’s Market, where she would often stop for Slush Puppy slushies, candy and ice cream. She said before that it was a store operated by several previous owners.
