Beltzville officials brace for holiday crowd
Next level heat coupled with the holiday means an extremely busy Fourth of July weekend is on tap for Beltzville State Park.
The park that straddles both Franklin and Towamensing townships routinely reaches capacity in hot weather and especially on holiday weekends.
With the continued heat, a very busy Fourth of July weekend at Beltzville State Park is anticipated, according to Maddy Neff, communications director, DCNR.
”Visitors should plan to arrive early, follow staff guidance, and be aware that the park may reach full capacity,” Neff said. “If the park reaches capacity, it will be closed to new visitors for the remainder of the day.”
Neff said that with the excessive heat, they encourage visitors to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, take breaks in the shade, and bring plenty of water for pets.
“Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek help immediately if symptoms appear,” she said. “If the park reaches capacity, we ask visitors to be patient and follow guidance from staff.”
Neff stressed that visitors should do their due diligence before they plan to visit the park.
“We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend,” she said. “Visitors should be prepared for crowds, check park conditions before traveling, and consider having backup plans in case Beltzville reaches capacity.”
DCNR shared heat safety tips to stay hydrated and safe outdoors.
• Drink more fluids. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink.
• Wear sunscreen. Sunburn can make you more dehydrated.
• Avoid caffeine, high-sugar, or alcoholic drinks which cause you to lose body fluids.
• Sports drinks can help replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
• Eat foods with high water content such as celery, watermelon and more.
• Don’t forget to provide plenty of fresh water for your pets.
• Learn signs of dehydration and heat-related illness.
