Albrightsville man accused of firing shots at driver after crash

An Albrightsville man is accused of firing multiple shots at another driver following a crash in Chestnuthill Township.

Police said the incident began at 8:51 p.m. on June 18, when Monroe County 911 received a call from a man reporting he had been involved in a crash with another vehicle that fled the scene.

The victim followed the vehicle to a home in the 200 block of Sunnybrook Drive, where the driver of the other vehicle, later identified as Zachary Runion, 27, went inside with his two children, ages 5 and 3.

According to police, Runion then came back outside and argued with the victim before returning inside the home.

As the victim remained at the end of the driveway preparing to call 911, he told police he heard five to six gunshots nearby and believed Runion was shooting at him. He drove away and called 911.

When troopers arrived, they found Runion outside with his children. Runion initially told police he did not own a firearm. However, police said Runion’s 5-year-old child told troopers his father had a gun under his bed. Neighbors also reported hearing five to six gunshots.

Police said Runion has a prior 2019 robbery conviction, making him legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.

Investigators said Runion later admitted he used an AR-style rifle to fire from the residence. A search of the home led to the seizure of an Anderson automatic rifle found under a mattress, along with a magazine, live rounds and a spent shell casing recovered from the balcony.

Runion is charged with three counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of endangering the welfare of children, and one count each of aggravated assault, prohibited possession of a firearm and possessing an instrument of crime.

He remains in Monroe County Correctional Facility after being denied bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 2 before District Judge Colleen Mancuso in Brodheadsville.
