Walnutport buys truck, applies for grants

Walnutport has purchased a Freightliner dump truck, applied for a pair of grants for a new firetruck and applied for grant funds to purchase a pair of police cars.

Borough council on Thursday unanimously approved resolutions to apply for both a State Local Share Account grant and Monroe County Local Share Account grant for a new ladder truck.

Last month, council on a unanimous vote approved resolutions to apply for both a State Local Share Account grant and Monroe County Local Share Account grant for a new firetruck.

Keith Kibler, a board member with the Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport, told council last month the department wants to replace a 2003 American LaFrance truck with a new KME ladder truck that is two years out from the time of order.

He said the cost of the KME ladder truck is expected to be about $1.6 million. No local taxpayer money was used toward the truck.

Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport Fire Chief Mike Wentz said at that time that due to the age of the truck, the parts aren’t available for repair and they are starting to have mechanical issues with it.

Also on Thursday, council on a unanimous measure agreed to purchase a 2027 freightliner dump truck with snow plow and salt spreader for $222,000, which is paid for from a Local Share Account grant.

In addition, council agreed to advertise to sell its 2003 freightliner dump truck with snowplow and salt spreader sometime after the new truck arrives.

Council also on Thursday approved resolutions to apply for Lehigh and Northampton LSA grant funds to purchase two police cars.
