Colonial captures all-star clash

Notre Dame-Green Pond standout Clark earns Offensive MVP as Colonial tops Schuylkill 46-34

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — A blue moon hovered over Rotary Field on the picturesque campus of Schuylkill Haven Area High School on Saturday. There were plenty of stars on the field as well.

Schuylkill League and Colonial League football all-stars raced up and down the field one final time in their high school careers, providing plenty of excitement for the crowd.

The Colonial League squad featured talent from schools including Notre Dame-Green Pond, Lehighton, Catasauqua and Pen Argyl. Among the standouts was Notre Dame’s Alex Clark, who showcased his speed throughout the game. Clark’s speed was a major factor in the Colonial League’s 46-34 victory. He earned Offensive MVP honors for the winning team.

Schuylkill Haven’s Nico “The Italian Stallion” Carestia was equally impressive, piling up 246 all-purpose yards rushing and receiving to earn Offensive MVP honors for the Schuylkill League.

Marian’s Jah Bushati was named Defensive MVP for the Schuylkill League, while Catasauqua linebacker Chris Wellington earned Defensive MVP honors for the Colonial League.

The game started slowly before turning into an offensive showcase.

The Schuylkill League took a 6-0 lead when Schuylkill Haven quarterback Max Heim, who is headed to Myrtle Beach Prep, powered into the end zone on a quarterback run. The scoring opportunity was set up by a turnover recovery and a 53-yard return by Williams Valley’s Evan Achenbach to the Colonial League 11-yard line.

The Colonial League answered quickly, capping an 83-yard drive with a 47-yard touchdown run by Southern Lehigh’s Sean Steckert, who is bound for East Stroudsburg University.

The Colonial League then built a 20-6 lead behind quarterbacks Jack Trickel of Palisades and Mason Soos of Pen Argyl. They connected with several playmakers, including Clark, Lehighton’s Caden Meek and Catasauqua’s Emmanuel Bolmer.

At the 11-minute mark of the second quarter, Trickel found Clark for a 43-yard touchdown. Clark later scored again after Austin Green of Lehighton returned an interception 30 yards to set up the score. Bolmer added the extra point for a 20-6 advantage.

The Schuylkill League responded when Carestia broke free down the sideline and raced to the end zone. Bushati’s extra point cut the deficit to 20-13.

The Colonial League answered immediately. Trickel connected with Clark on a 58-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 26-13 at halftime.

Late in the third quarter, Soos launched a 52-yard touchdown pass to Clark to make it 32-13. Carestia answered with an 11-yard touchdown run for the Schuylkill League.

The Colonial League struck again when Meek hauled in a 55-yard touchdown pass from Trickel, giving his team a commanding lead entering the fourth quarter.

Blue Mountain’s Reese Miller scored on a 1-yard run for the Schuylkill League, but Steckert’s 64-yard touchdown run put the finishing touch on the Colonial League victory.
