Spence leads JT at Colonial meet

Olympian sprinter wins 400, combines with teammates to capture 400 relay; NL’s Salih, NW’s Nestor also earn gold

WHITEHALL – Kayden Spence didn’t just make his mark in one event Wednesday — he helped shape the entire meet.

The Jim Thorpe junior delivered one of the day’s most complete performances at the Colonial League Track and Field Championships, factoring into three events and helping the Olympians stay in the mix from start to finish at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex.

After opening his day on the 400 relay, Spence returned to win the 400 in 49.84, finishing ahead of Southern Lehigh’s Sean Steckert (50.04) and continuing a breakout season that has seen his times steadily drop.

“I’m extremely proud,” Spence said. “This season has been full of surprises for me.”

After opening the year in the low 50-second range, Spence has shaved significant time off his mark.

“I started the season around 51, 50 flat, and once we got to the big meets, my time just kept dropping,” he said. “I went from breaking 50 to 49.2, then 48.6. I think I’ve still got more.”

That progression has been fueled by a commitment to training.

“I worked all summer — it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Spence said. “You get out what you put into it.”

Even after securing the individual title, Spence’s focus quickly shifted to the meet’s final event.

“My real goal today was the 4x4,” he said. “That’s where the competition is.”

Jim Thorpe, which entered the 400 relay as the top seed (42.11), delivered a championship performance with the team of Spence, Josh Louk, Maksim Letosky and Robert Levins in 42.55, edging Palisades (42.57) in a tight finish.

“We’ve been running together all season,” Letosky said. “We came in looking for a league championship and knew what we were capable of.”

“This has been our group all year — our four fastest guys,” Louk added. “Our coach put us in a great position, and we trusted it.”

The chemistry within the unit has helped the Olympians continue to improve.

“We work well together,” Letosky said. “We all push each other to be the best.”

The meet built toward its final event — and delivered one of its most memorable moments.

In monsoon-like conditions during the 1600 relay — the final event on the track — both Southern Lehigh and Jim Thorpe rewrote the record books, each breaking the previous league mark of 3:26.44 set by the Spartans in 2004 while battling through heavy rain.

The Jim Thorpe team of Louk, Spencer Gothard, Levins and Spence – who ran a blistering anchor leg of 48.88 – placed second in 3:26.32, holding its seed after entering the race second (3:26.18) behind Southern Lehigh (3:25.08). The Spartans won with a time of 3:24.23.

“Our team gave everything we had,” Levins said. “That’s all we could ask for.”

The performance capped a strong showing for the Olympians as the postseason gets underway.

“I’m really looking forward to districts,” Levins said. “I think we can do something special.”

While Spence’s performance stood out on the boys side, several other area athletes delivered championship efforts.

Northern Lehigh’s Zaid Salih turned in one of the day’s most determined performances in the 800.

Entering as the top seed at 2:00.90, Salih held off a late push to win in 2:00.19 after bouncing back from a close runner-up finish in the 1600 earlier in the day when Wilson’s Jeffrey Sunderlin surged to victory.

“I was getting flashbacks,” Salih said, referring to the 1600. “I couldn’t have a repeat of the mile, so I made sure I finished it.”

When a challenger closed in during the final stretch of the 800, Salih responded.

“I just never want to lose,” he said.

The win marked a turning point for Salih, who said this is the first season he has fully committed to the sport.

“This is the first year I’ve really taken track seriously,” he said. “It’s great to finally start winning events and representing my school.”

Salih, a longtime Northern Lehigh student, said that opportunity carries extra meaning.

“I love Northern Lehigh,” he said. “I’ve been here since kindergarten, so it means everything to represent my school in a positive way.”

He also credited his support system.

“My mom has been there for everything,” Salih said. “I couldn’t do it without her.”

Wilson’s Justin Hetrick, seeded second at 2:01.54, also held form with a strong runner-up finish in 2:01.31.

On the girls side, Northwestern’s Rosalia Nestor turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances.

Nestor entered the 1600 seeded second behind Wilson’s Juliana Bonham (5:11.99), but flipped the script, winning the race in 5:18.09 with a strong finish.

“Honestly, I love running with Julia — she’s my favorite person to race,” Nestor said. “My goal for leagues was to focus more on racing strategy than pacing.”

With no clear frontrunner to chase, Nestor had to adjust her approach.

“It was kind of me against myself,” she said. “Or just the breathing behind me.”

The win marked her first Colonial League title, and capped a season she described as “a lot of ups and downs.”

“It feels really good,” Nestor said. “It’s encouraging to have a good race and not feel fatigued afterward.”

She wasn’t done there.

Nestor also placed second in the 800 after entering seeded fourth (2:24.40), showcasing her range in a standout double.

Looking ahead, she has her sights set on state-qualifying standards.

“I think with people around me, I’ll have a good chance,” she said of both the 800 and 1600.

The first day of competition also produced area champions.

Jim Thorpe’s Isabella Roman captured the javelin title, while teammate Logan Gillespie added a championship in the 3200. Northern Lehigh’s Anna Trelease and Landen Klimek each earned titles in the discus, and Northwestern’s Michael Lagowy also soared to the top of the podium in the high jump.

The success reflected what several programs have shown all season.

Jim Thorpe’s boys entered the meet unbeaten at 7-0 in dual competition and as Colonial League West Division champions, while Northwestern’s girls matched that mark, finishing 7-0 and claiming the West Division title.

NOT DONE YET ... With several events postponed due to weather — including the EPC boys and girls javelin and the Colonial League boys and girls pole vault — the meet will conclude Thursday at Whitehall.

LOOKING AHEAD ... Even with unfinished business remaining, the focus will quickly shift to what comes next.

The District 11 Championships are scheduled for next Tuesday and Wednesday at Whitehall’s Zephyr Sports Complex.
