W. Penn tables truck rules
West Penn Township supervisors tabled action on an ordinance that would impose restrictions on the size of vehicles operating at the intersection of Mill and Medical Crossing roads.
The decision was made after township solicitor Paul Datte said that while he drafted an ordinance regarding the matter, an engineering study to support its enforcement must be completed.
Datte explained that residents expressed concerns about the intersection at a previous meeting.
“The complaint was made that trucks had to back in and back out because they couldn’t make the turn” from Mill Road onto Medical Crossing Road, he said at Monday’s supervisors’ meeting.
Residents noted that large trucks attempt to turn but have problems doing so. Drivers frequently strike or knock down a stop sign at the intersection, they said.
Datte explained that the township wouldn’t be able to restrict large vehicles unless an engineering study supports the concerns.
After some discussion, supervisors tabled action on the draft ordinance — and voted to get an estimate of the cost of an engineering study.
Township engineer Mike Begas of ARRO Consulting said he will look at the radius of the curve “and whether a truck can actually make that turn or not.”
He’ll also return with estimates for the study.
If the study is undertaken and proves that the intersection isn’t capable of supporting large trucks, the ordinance can be adopted and enforced by police.
In an unrelated matter, the township lifted its burn ban on April 29. Residents were urged to follow the township burning ordinance if they decide to burn.
