ID of Franklin fire victim not confirmed

The identity of the person who died in a house fire last week in Franklin Township is not able to be released.

Jason Smith, Carbon County Chief Deputy Coroner, said Saturday, “A positive identification could not be conclusively established during the autopsy.”

He said additional forensic analysis, including DNA comparison, will be needed to confirm identification.

“Our office has been working directly with the presumed family members of the decedent. In coordination with the Pennsylvania State Police, a family DNA sample is expected to be obtained on Monday for comparison with the decedent.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that any identification released by this office is accurate, scientifically supported, and appropriately communicated to the family,” Smith said.

Fire chief Lynn Diehl said the fire was reported at 11 p.m. Aug. 15 at 495 Cherry Hill Road.

The fire was called in by neighbors and people traveling on the turnpike who saw the blaze, Diehl said. The mobile home with additions was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.

Parryville, Bowmanstown and Lehighton companies were called to the scene. Walnutport Fire Company was called as the rapid intervention team.

Firefighters remained on the scene over three hours.

While the State Police Fire Marshal was on scene the next day, a body believed to the resident’s was discovered in the rubble.

The Carbon County Coroner’s Office was called.

An autopsy was conducted at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Center.

The Carbon County Coroner’s Office, in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police and Franklin Township Police Department, continues to actively investigate this incident.

Diehl said three dogs also perished in the blaze.

Diehl said the fire marshal has determined the cause to be undetermined.
