Nesquehoning
Historical Society
The Nesquehoning Historical Society has announced the second event in a series of local history presentations as part of the town’s America250 Celebration.
The presentation, “The Lost Village of Lausanne,” takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday. Doors open an hour before the presentation.
Historian Vince Hydro’s presentation will talk about the area before the founding of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company and the construction of the Lehigh Navigation, when the Village of Lausanne was settled at the mouth of the Nesquehoning Creek.
The village was the origination point of the earliest ark shipments down the Lehigh River and was originally intended by the LC&N to be the site of company headquarters.
Hydro’s presentation will also include a short history of the Lehigh and Susquehanna Turnpike, as well as Lausanne’s famous Landing Tavern.
Following his presentation, Hydro will be signing copies of his book “Outpost on the Lehigh River: The Lost Village of Lausanne,” as well as copies of his other self-published books.
The event will take place at the society’s museum, 157 W. Railroad St., and is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the historical society are always welcome.
Four-borough cleanup
The Panther Valley Blueprint Community’s Four Borough Community Roadside Clean-Up Day will take place on Saturday. It has been postponed from last weekend due to weather.
People who signed up to participate should have been notified via email about the date change and are asked to confirm their availability. Anyone who would like to help with the roadside cleanup on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. are encouraged to reach out at Contact@PVBlueprint.org.
Volunteers from Nesquehoning, Lansford, Summit Hill and Coaldale will focus their efforts along Routes 209 and 902 in the four boroughs to beautify the community. Each of the borough offices had registration forms for interested volunteers.
The Blueprint team is coordinating with the state Department of Transportation, and safety guidance, trash bags, grabbers, vests, gloves and transportation to and from the designated cleanup sites will be provided.
As a thank you, lunch will be provided at the Panther Valley Intermediate School.
