Tamaqua secures police, pool funds

Tamaqua will secure funds that will help finance projects at the borough pool and the new police department and community center.

The two general obligation notes will come from the Mauch Chunk Trust Company, which offered the best rates of 17 financial institutions.

The borough is taking out $1.1 million for the reconstruction work at the H.D. Buehler Memorial Pool at Bungalow Park. The 20-year loan comes with a fixed 4.7% interest rate.

It will also secure a $2 million line of credit that will be available for about 2 ½ years and used for the police station. The credit line will essentially be reimbursed by a $2 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant the borough received for the project at the former Moose Building on East Broad Street.

The borough will pay bills as they come due, submit paid invoices to the state, and be reimbursed through the grant.

Tamaqua can withdraw as needed from both funds, meaning that it will pay interest only on the amount it withdraws.

Borough council unanimously approved both loans.

The borough received a $1.75 million grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for the $3.66 million pool project, which will be covered mostly by grants.

Work should begin soon but the pool will be closed for the season. Final completion is expected in April of 2027.

Lehighton borough recently agreed to open the Baer Memorial Pool to Tamaqua residents. Day passes will be $15 for adults and $10 for children.

Tamaqua council will send a letter to Lehighton officials to thank them for the offer.

Work on the new police station and community center is underway. The estimated $4.4 million project will also include offices for the local district magistrate.
