Coopersburg man, 22 killed in I-78 collision

A 22-year-old man from Coopersburg died in a two-vehicle crash on Thursday at about 11:27 p.m. on Interstate 78 eastbound in Lower Macungie Township.

Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio said the man was pronounced dead at the scene around 12:28 this morning. His name has not been released.

Buglio said the crash occurred in the area of mile marker 54.2. Emergency personnel had to extricate the man from the vehicle.

He said an autopsy will be held at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensic Center to assist in determining the cause of the death.

Buglio said the victim has been positively identified and the next of kin has been notified, however, he said, the name is being withheld out of respect for the family so they may have time and privacy needed to grieve and support one another.

State police at the Fogelsville barracks, who are investigating the crash, said officers were summoned to the scene for a crash involving a tractor trailer. They said it was determined a 2010 Ford Mustang operated by the 22-year-old and a 2007 Peterbilt 387 tractor trailer, operated by a 56-year-old man from New Holland, collided on the interstate.

Police said a 21-year-old woman from Mashpee, Massachusetts, who was a passenger in the Mustang, was treated at the scene by personnel from the Cetronia Ambulance and transported to a hospital.

There were no injuries to the driver of the tractor trailer.

Police said all traffic during the crash investigation was detoured on eastbound I-78 onto Route 100 until about 5:45 this morning. I-78 Westbound traffic remained open.

The crash investigation continues to be investigated by the Fogelsville Patrol Unit who were assisted at the scene by a Troop M Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist, Troop M Forensic Services Unit, Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, Lehigh County Coroner’s Office, PennDOT, Cetronia Ambulance, South Whitehall Township Police Department, Upper Macungie Township Police Department, Goodwill Fire Company, Lehigh Valley Paramedics, Upper Macungie Fire Department and Lower Macungie Township Fire Department.
