N. Lehigh president addresses director’s LGBT comment

Remarks made by a member of the Northern Lehigh School District board of directors pertaining to the LGBT community will not result in any censure action against the unamed person.

Board President Mathias Green began Monday’s school board meeting with a statement on the matter.

“I’ve had some conversations and/or messages with some people and they’re concerned one of our board members writing negative comments to LGBT, gay sites, whatever,” Green said. “I’m told that some of them are planning on showing up tonight to bring this to a head.

“I need to tell you that that board member has every right to do that, they have a first constitutional amendment right to speak out on anything that they want and we will not be taking any kind of censure action, etc. against that person because it would be against the law for us to do that.

“I’ve responded so far to some of those proposals. I would say if you’re here tonight or not, I will not be responding to any more, I would ask (Superintendent) Dr. (Matthew J.) Link to also not respond to any more of those requests at this point in time.

Link then offered a response.

“When school board members or anyone does make a comment like that, do not interpret that as reflective of Northern Lehigh School District,” Link said. “Those are individual comments.”

Contacted Tuesday afternoon, Link said he did not know where the remarks emanated from, other than what Green shared publicly during the board meeting.

Efforts to contact Green for the origin of the comments were unsuccessful for today’s publication.
