American Legion to hold services in Slatington

The American Legion Allen O. Delke Post 16 of Slatington announced its schedule for Memorial Day services.

The main service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Union Cemetery in Slatington. In the event of rain, it would be held at Slatington Baptist Church in Slatington.

Ron Humanick, commander, Allen O. Delke Post 16, encouraged residents to attend.

“Come out and support the American Legion,” Humanick said. “It’s a long-standing tradition to honor its fallen military members, provide additional support to the community.”

Rural services will begin Sunday. Humanick said they will visit numerous cemeteries starting Sunday and into Monday morning, and that they put down over 2,000 flags.

The main speaker on Monday will be former U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Ronald Kester.

The Northern Lehigh High School Band will perform, and others who will be on hand are Boy Scout Troop 66, Slatington Mayor Jeralyn Walters Schoch, and the American Legion Honor Guard.

The Legion is always in search of new members, Humanick said. Members must have served in any branch of military service. Anyone interested in becoming a member may sign up at the Legion. Call the Legion at 610-767-4142, or call Humanick at 610-554-8309.

“We’re striving to keep this long running post from 1919 alive; it’s one of the oldest posts in the state of Pennsylvania,” he said. “We’re just looking for any veterans that can donate a little bit of their time.”

Humanick said monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of each month at the Legion.
