Walker park price jumps

Walker Township’s plans for Wildcat Park have hit a snag.

The initial cost of the project was estimated to be $82,671.

However, at last month’s supervisors meeting, the sole bid for the project came in at $106,866.48 from Spotts Brothers Inc. from Schuylkill Haven.

The supervisors advised Township Engineer Mike Begis to contact the Pa. Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, who is providing a grant, to get their input on what options the have to cut costs on the project. DCNR has certain requirements that have to be met to get the grant.

The project includes resurfacing, replacing the swings and adding a new play structure.

The current monkey bars, sliding board, and merry-go-round will stay. For Americans with Disabilities Act compliance, a handicapped parking space, paved pathways, and special swings will be added.

Previous work that was completed include resurfaced tennis, basketball and pickleball courts.

Walker Township will also file a request for a 30-day extension on the deadline to approve or deny the bid.

The decision would normally need to be made within 60 days; however the township will request the extension from Spotts Brothers to consider its options.
