Carbon County extends grant

Carbon County has extended an extension for grant money that is being used to take down a blighted building in Lehighton.

On Thursday, the board of commissioners approved the project activity completion extension requests to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development asking that Community Development Block Grant funds deadline that was awarded to Lehighton be extended from April 30 to Sept. 30.

The money is being used to help with the clearance and demolition of 135-139 N. First St.

The project has been in the works for years. On Thursday commissioners said they were excited the project finally started.

“It’s an eyesore and a fire hazard, not only to that building but surrounding neighbors as well,” Commissioner Wayne Nothstein said. “It’s a safety hazard. I’m looking forward to it being gone, leveled and grass planted.”
