Harassment, bomb threat at Lehighton homicide area

The father of a man charged with homicide in Lehighton on Monday has been charged for harassment and led police to investigate a bomb threat.

Francis L. Moyer II, 68, of Lehighton, faces charges on three counts of harassment and two counts of disorderly conduct in an incident unrelated to Monday’s homicide, police said.

Moyer was arraigned Wednesday and is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000, 10% monetary bail. He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing April 10 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.

Lehighton Borough Police Chief Troy Abelovsky said Friday that while in custody, Moyer made statements and threats leading to the department returning to the area.

On Thursday, Lehighton Police Department was called back to the area this time for a bomb threat.

The department, working in conjunction with Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, received a threat of violence to local public buildings, Abelovsky said.

Information claimed explosive devices or explosive components were contained within the residence of 243 Carbon St., Lehighton Borough would be used to carry out the threat.

Police executed a search warrant to ensure there was no threat to the community at around 3 p.m. Thursday.

Lehighton Borough Police Department requested the services of Pennsylvania State Police Explosive K-9 Unit to assist with the search warrant.

During the search, a device was detected and the Pennsylvania State Police Bomb Unit assessed the device and determined it was inert and not a threat. The device was removed from the location.

Explosive K-9 Unit and Lehighton officers cleared the residence and determined no threat to public safety.

Police said charges are being filed for terroristic threats against Moyer.

On Monday, Edward Whitehead Jr., 59, who lived at 239 Carbon St., was struck with a chain saw and a knife and died from his injuries at St. Luke’s - Carbon campus.

Zak Russell Moyer, 30, who police said was wearing a mask and a black garment similar to the “Scream” movie character, is charged with the homicide.

Zak Moyer was seen on surveillance video footage exiting the rear of 239 Carbon St., and is seen entering the rear property at 241/243 Carbon St.

Zak Moyer was arraigned before Schrantz Tuesday morning and is being held at the Carbon County Correctional Facility without bail.

Zak Moyer is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
