Lehighton Police called to bomb threat in area of homicide

Lehighton Police Department was called back to the area where a homicide took place Monday, this time for a bomb threat.

Lehighton Borough Police Department, working in conjunction with Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, received a threat of violence to local public buildings, according to Chief Troy Abelovsky.

Information claiming explosive devices or explosive components were contained within the residence of 243 Carbon St., Lehighton Borough would be used to carry out said threat.

Police executed a search warrant to ensure there was no threat to the community at approximately 3 p.m.

Lehighton Borough Police Department requested the services of Pennsylvania State Police Explosive K-9 Unit to assist with the search warrant.

During the search, a device was detected and the Pennsylvania State Police Bomb Unit.

The Pennsylvania State Police Bomb Unit assessed the device and determined it was inert and not a threat. The device was removed from the location.

Explosive K-9 Unit and Lehighton Officers cleared the residence and located no threat to public safety. Police say charges are being filed for terroristic threats against the offender, who has not been named at the time.

On Monday, Edward Whitehead Jr., 59, who lived at 239 Carbon St., was struck with a chainsaw and a knife and died from his injuries at St. Luke’s - Carbon campus.

Zak Russel Moyer, 30, who police said was wearing a mask and a black garment similar “Scream” movie character, is charged with the homicide.

Moyer was seen on surveillance video footage exiting the rear of 239 Carbon St., and is seen entering the rear property at 241/243 Carbon St.

Moyer was arraigned before District Judge Eric Schrantz Tuesday morning and is being held at Carbon County Correctional Facility without bail.

Moyer is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing April 3.
