Turnpike to close in Carbon early Sunday

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the Northeast Extension (I-476) will be closed in both directions on Sunday from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m. between the Mahoning Valley Interchange, Exit 74, and the Route 903 Interchange, Exit 87, Carbon County.

The closure is necessary for the protection of motorists and workers so crews can safely remove overhead bridge beams. The bridge, which carries Hatchery Road over the Turnpike, is at milepost A83.88 in Penn Forest Township, Carbon County.

During this road closure, the entry and exit ramps at Hickory Run Service Plaza will be closed to all traffic. Visitors that do not exit the service plaza prior to 11:45 p.m. on Saturday will have to remain in the service plaza until the work is completed and the ramps are reopened to traffic. The Hickory Run Service Plaza is located on I-476 at milepost 86.10 in Carbon County.

Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. Digital message signs will also provide information on closures and detours. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly.
