Pl. Valley performs ‘Sister Act’ this weekend

The Pleasant Valley High School Musical Drama Club will perform “Sister Act the Musical” this weekend in the high school auditorium.

The adaptation of the 1992 hit movie featuring Whoopi Goldberg will take the high school stage at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. It is directed by Dan and Marcie Mulligan with production assistance by Donna Morris.

The musical version opened on Broadway in 2011 with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Glenn Slater, and book by Bill and Cheri Steinkellner.

Sister Act is the story of a nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a murder by Curtis Jackson, a mob boss and nightclub owner. Jackson, played by James Mauro, decides to get rid of the witness - Deloris. That’s when Deloris, played by Jeneria Williams, goes to Officer Eddie Souther at the police station. Souther, played by Aidan Sawyer, decides to place Deloris in a witness protection program with nuns at a church in Philadelphia.

Mother Superior, played by Madeline Zipp, reluctantly agrees to harbor Deloris, but she is concerned about Deloris’ worldly character having a negative influence on the other nuns.

Deloris does have an influence, just not what Mother Superior thought it would be. Instead, she uses her musical talents to turn a stoic nuns’ choir into something flashy, and ends up saving the church from closing due to a lack of parishioners.

In his seventh show for the school district, senior Aidan Sawyer, aka Officer Eddie Souther, said it’s a sobering experience knowing this is his last musical performance in high school.

Sawyer knows it sounds like a cliché, but he said, “It does feel like I just got here. It’s been good. It’s bittersweet, because I obviously can’t stay here forever but I am going to miss the directors, the friends, and the group of people that I’ve met here.”

As for his character, Sawyer said he likes Officer Souther.

“It’s a fun character. He’s a bit of a loser, but he redeems himself in the end,” Sawyer said. “He has a couple fun solos throughout the show. It’s a good part.”

James Mauro, also a senior, doesn’t have the same fondness as Sawyer does for his character. Mauro’s character is the mobster Curtis Jackson.

Mauro said his character seems like there might be something good about him at first, but the truth comes out.

“He’s very dark,” Mauro said. “This is my first time playing a dark, evil character.”

Also a veteran of the high school stage, Mauro said, “It honestly went by so fast. I’ve enjoyed my time here.”

Both students are heading to Kutztown University in the fall.

As for Sister Act, Sawyer said he thinks the audience is going to enjoy it.

“It’s fun. I like the groovy music. I think it’s going to be a good show,” he said.

Mauro added that he thinks “people are going to fall in love with the characters.”

The choir of nuns feature Sister Mary Robert played by Sarah Larregui, Sister Mary Patrick played by Alayna Boland, and Sister Mary Lazarus played by Megan O’Brien. Also in the choir are additional soloists including Khloe Gutai, Kylie Sharp, Jaime Rodriguez, Dylan Carrol, Sam Lowell, Sophia Dobson, Audrey McElwee, Maria Cuautla, Lydia Peters, Olivia Joseph, Micah Hernandez and Eden Torres. Rounding out the ensemble are Omar Martinez, Noah Cline, Arlo Calhoun and Rachel Costello. Monsignor O’Hara, played by Owen Gordon, leads the congregation.

The gangsters in Jackson’s mob include T.J. played by Isaac Mitchell; Joey, Julian Dempster; Pablo, Takenori Yogui; and Ernie, Tyler Jaquez.

Tickets can be purchased at the door. All seating is general admission. Advanced tickets can be purchased by emailing Donna Morris at morris.donna@pvbears.org.
