Parents react to social media lockdown reports

Pleasant Valley Middle School parents arrived to take their children from school Friday after posts by students on social media said the school was on lockdown and police were present.

Superintendent James Konrad said the rumor on social media Friday morning that the middle school was on lockdown wasn’t true.

“There’s not one building in the school district on lockdown. The school district is safe and secure. There is no threat,” he said. “Students are transitioning throughout the building as they attend their different classes and lunches.”

Pleasant Valley Middle School Principal Kendal Askins sent a message to parents saying there was a rumor of a gun being found on school grounds last night. “It was fully investigated and false.”

Askins went on to say that, “While we were investigating the students were/are on restricted movement. We also have increased police presence to ensure safety. We are safe and have no current danger.”

Konrad said, “As always parents can come to pick up their students.”

Messages were also left for Pennsylvania state police for additional information.

On Monday, a 12-year-old boy was charged and committed to a juvenile detention center on Northampton County after police investigated a report they received on Feb. 23 of a possible school shooting directed toward multiple school administrators at the Pleasant Valley Middle School.

State police at Fern Ridge said the boy was charged with causing or risking a catastrophe, threat to use weapons of mass destruction, terroristic threats and reckless endangerment.

Police said they were called to the school at approximately 11 a.m. Friday after a report was made to “Safe to Say.”
