Carbon to showcase emergency responders

Carbon County officials are preparing to hold a second elected official training to showcase what the area’s emergency responders do in an emergency.

On Thursday, Commissioner Wayne Nothstein announced that the event will take place on June 1 at the Carbon County Emergency Operations Training Center, 88 Public Safety Lane, Nesquehoning.

The event is open to all municipal elected officials, as well as other governmental officials.

Nothstein said that the first training was well received, with over a dozen elected officials attending and participating in various drills.

He added that the training this time will include various drills, including a live burn scenario, active shooter drills, pulling fire hose and more.

“It’s a very good educational day for elected officials,” Nothstein said, noting that it aims to provide real world emergency scenarios and how fire responders handle them. “No one (municipal) entity can handle the situations we’re running into.”

He cited an incident that happened in Jim Thorpe last Wednesday, where Mark Hughes of Lancaster crashed a vehicle, broke into a home and led police on a search after being observed with a gun in the area.

Several agencies from around the area, as well as Pennsylvania State Police participated to take the man into custody.

“It’s extremely important that our elected officials know what our police, fire and EMS services are doing.”

To attend, elected officials in all municipalities can email cceotc@ptd.net or waynenothstein@carboncounty.net by May 24. Space is limited. Clothing that should be worn include jeans, closed toed footwear, and weather-appropriate attire for that day’s weather conditions.

Nothstein asked that municipalities provide emails for council members and supervisors, as well as mayors and any other elected officials so that a comprehensive email list can be compiled so notices and other emails can easily be sent to everyone in municipal government.
