Lancaster man charged for attempted break-in, gun incident

A Lancaster man is in custody after he was observed walking in Jim Thorpe with a gun.

Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joseph Schatz said that officers were dispatched to the area of Lentz Trail for a crash at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

When they arrived, the driver of the vehicle could not be found, however, police were advised of an attempted break-in at a home on Chestnut Hill.

Police arrived on scene of the break-in and were then called for a report of a man, later identified as Mark Hughes, walking with a gun.

Officers were unable to locate Hughes and called in additional departments, as well as a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter to aid in the search.

During this time, schools in the Jim Thorpe Area School District, as well as Carbon County office buildings were put on lockdown as a safety precaution, and residents were urged to remain indoors.

At approximately 10:49 a.m., police located Hughes at the Dollar General Store in Lehighton and was taken into custody.

Charges are forthcoming.

In addition to Jim Thorpe, Nesquehoning and Summit Hill police departments, Pennsylvania State Police, the Carbon County Sheriff’s office and the Carbon County District Attorney’s office assisted in the investigation.
