Dr. Nicholson, longtime Palmerton physician, dies

Dr. John H. Nicholson, 82, of Palmerton, died Thursday in his home, holding the hand of his wife Joanie of 52 years, with his loving family by his side, according to his obituary

A graduate of Marian Catholic High School, Tamaqua, LaSalle University, and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, he practiced medicine for 41 years in Palmerton. He retired in 2018.

Dr. Nicholson was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, Palmerton, and served honorably in the U.S. Army National Guard.

According to information from his daughter, Betsy Nicholson Hanavan, he was diagnosed in November with a rare autoimmune disease, Goodpasture Syndrome, that was attacking his kidneys

Hanavan posted on Facebook Sunday, “Our dad loved this community and he loved his patients. He knew your name, your family members, when he last saw you – everything – and he cared deeply for each of you. This is why he practiced more years than most. He truly loved what he did. It didn’t matter if it were a weekend, after hours or a holiday, if one of his patients needed him, he responded. And he did so without hesitation.”

For his birthday the family asked the community and former patients to send greetings to him.

“We cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of love you showed when I posted about showering him with love for his birthday. My dad, and our family, was overwhelmed by the cards and messages. You are all so amazing and definitely made him feel special.”

Born in Hazleton, he was the son of the late James and Elizabeth (Greenaway) Nicholson.

John is survived by his loving wife Joanie, devoted daughters Amy, Betsy, Chrissy and their spouses. He also has an adopted son Jay. Grampy will be forever loved and missed by his amazing grandchildren. John leaves behind his loving brother, Dr. James Nicholson. He was predeceased by his sister Maryann.

Public calling period is 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26 at T.K. Thomas Funeral Home, 145 Delaware Ave, Palmerton. Memorial service to be held privately.
