2023 in review: Lehighton man barricaded self in mine shaft

A Lehighton man who holed up 20 stories underground inside the No. 9 Coal Mine attraction in Lansford continues to await trial in Carbon County Court of Common Pleas.

David Eisenhower, 43, remains in the county prison in lieu of $75,000 after barricading himself in the mine for nearly 13 hours and threatening workers who discovered the break-in May 25.

Mine workers found a cut lock and discovered someone on a lower level of the mine, beneath the area open for tours. Eisenhower told them he had a gun, and threatened to shoot anyone who came down.

Workers found clothing along the way to the lower level, and smoke was rising from inside the mine, as Eisenhower had set a fire to stay warm underground despite the danger of a methane explosion or underground mine fire, such as the one in Centralia.

The incident brought out state mine officials, county emergency management and detectives, state and local police, in addition to the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team.

The SERT Team along with mine officials brought Eisenhower out of the mine and he was taken to the hospital for evaluation before being lodged in the county lockup on warrants.

Officials found shows, food debris, clothing, cans of food, cellphones and a larger knife inside the mine. There was also remnants of a fire in the mine.

Eisenhower faces charges of burglary, risking a catastrophe, criminal trespass, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and three counts of terroristic threats after the incident.
