Salvation Army’s kettle donations doubled today

Donors to Salvation Army Red Kettles in the Army’s Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division could see their contributions doubled today as part of the Territorial Commander’s 2023 Kettle Cash Match Challenge to support local neighbors in need.

The division includes the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

The red kettles are manned by volunteers and staff from local jurisdictions, known as corps. Funding for the match will come from The Salvation Army USA Eastern Territory. Each corps in the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division will be eligible for matching funds up to $5,000.

The kettle match comes at a critical time as the division is experiencing a decrease in donations in its individual local corps of as much as 20%. The Kettle Cash Match Challenge offers an opportunity for the community to amplify their contributions to help their local corps reach their Red Kettle Campaign’s fundraising goals as well as the increase in requests for assistance.

“In this season of giving, your support means more than ever. As we gather with loved ones, let’s remember those who struggle, not just during the holidays but every day of the year,” said Lt. Colonel Larry Ashcraft, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division. “With donations down compared to last year, our ability to provide essential services will be significantly strained. Your generosity isn’t simply a drop in the bucket; it’s a lifeline for families struggling to make ends meet.”

The division also reported a decrease in Red Kettle volunteer hours compared to previous years. In the fiscal year that ended in September 2022, bell ringer collective volunteer hours decreased by 11.7%, compared to the previous fiscal year, totaling a $506,123.49 decrease in in-person donations.

Individuals who cannot donate in person today can support by contributing to the Division’s Virtual Red Kettle or to their local Salvation Army Corps by texting “KETTLE” to 31333. Donations made online, through checks or credit cards at the kettle, or pledge donations do not qualify for the match.

One-hundred percent of the funds raised through the Red Kettles stay local to support services during the holidays and beyond into the new year, which includes its food pantries and distribution programs, shelter and housing programs, case management programs, recreational and educational programs for youth, and much more.
