Veterans Day events

Area Veterans Day observances:

• The annual Veterans Day Parade starts at 10 a.m. Saturday from the 900 block of East Broad Street in Tamaqua, which was recently selected by the Veterans Day National Committee as a regional site for a Veterans Day commemoration.

The parade is organized by the American Legion CH Berry Post 173 of Tamaqua and special guests will be on hand to celebrate the national honor.

• The American Legion, Post 927, Gilbert, will host a public Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Post home on Route 209.

• Ross Township Historical Society museum will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

That time will be the same for every second Saturday of each month thereafter.

This Saturday the Society is showcasing uniforms from the First and Second World War along with a uniform from the Korean War and associated military related items.

New donations have arrived, with a few specific to the military. The community is invited to honor those who have served.

There is no charge for admission and all are welcome. The museum is located at 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg. Look for the large “Open” flag. For more information contact judyj@ptd.net. and/or visit the website rosshistoricalsociety.com

• Polk Township Memorial will be the place for an 11:30 prayer service on Veterans Day. If it is rainy the service will be held at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church across Route 209.

• The individual vendors at the Slatington Farmers Market, located at 8281 Route 873 in Slatington will host a Veteran’s Day Celebration on Saturday during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.) to celebrate and recognize the contribution that our past and present military personnel make for our country. Each vendor will offer various discounts and specials, most offering a 20% discount to any customer identifying themselves as a past or present military service member.

The National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem will honor veterans on Saturday.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a commemoration ceremony hosted by the Steelworkers Veterans Memorial Committee on the Museum’s plaza. The commemoration ceremony will include a performance by the Broughal Middle School Band as well as remarks from various distinguished guests.

Keynote speaker will be Staff Sgt. Tim Chambers. Since 2002 Chambers has become known as “The Saluting Marine” for a yearly salute he held in Washington, D.C., at the annual POW/MIA event known as Rolling Thunder. Additional appearances are anticipated to include the Bethlehem Mounted Police.

Following the ceremony, veterans and their families receive free admission to the museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors will have a chance to view military-related archival footage in the Barnette Education Center throughout the day.

• Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 will host a Veteran-themed breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at the fire company on Route 903. Breakfast buffet is half price for veterans.
