Man tries to run down officers with pickup

A Franklin Township man with multiple bench warrants faces charges after attempting to strike officers with his vehicle, authorities said.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Deputy Ian Achberger of the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office in the case against Thomas Schaub:

At 3:20 p.m. Oct. 11, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received a tip from the community that Wendy Kneller, 50, who has multiple common pleas bench warrants was located in the 300 block of Held Street in Lehighton.

Achberger, along with Sgt. Nicole Thalmann, approached from the alley in the back of the residence, and identified Kneller.

Achberger spotted Schaub, 45, on the side of the residence near Kneller.

Kneller ignored Achberger’s commands and jumped into the passenger seat of a black GMC pickup truck while Schaub got into the driver seat and immediately started the engine.

Thalmann and Achberger told them to stop and Schaub put his vehicle in reverse and accelerated at a high rate of speed toward Held Street with Kneller in the passenger side of the vehicle.

Schaub then put the vehicle into drive and accelerated at a high rate of speed and attempted to strike Thalmann and Achberger.

While Schaub accelerated toward them, Achberger unholstered his firearm and pointed at Schaub, who was in the driver seat.

Schaub then suddenly stopped about 3 to 4 feet away from Achberger and suddenly put his vehicle back in reverse, where he reversed all the way down to the intersection of Held Street and Union Hill Road, where multiple people were waiting at the bus stop.

The people ran from the area to avoid being struck by Schaub.

Schaub then fled down a dirt road next to the Union Hill Cemetery, then to Court Street, and to Route 209 (Interchange Road).

Achberger lost vision of the vehicle because of how fast Schaub was driving.

Kneller avoided apprehension.

Schaub faces charges on four counts each of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person, and one count each of fleeing or attempting to elude, hindering apprehension, and obstruction of governmental function.

Schaub is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $150,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Nov. 1 before District Judge William J, Kissner of Palmerton.
