Film anniversaries

Through the month of October, there are numerous films celebrating commemorative anniversaries that will be shown at the Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas in the ArtsQuest center.

On Oct. 18, Ganja & Hess is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a showing at 7 p.m. in the Frank Banko Alehouse Blue Cinema. Directed by Bill Gunn, this once-lost masterpiece of independent horror, the blade of an ancient African knife spreads a vampiric contagion to research assistant George, whose bloodlust soon infects Dr. Hess Green, as well. When Hess is enraptured by George’s wife, Ganja, he attempts to conceal his terrible secret, but at a high price. The film is part of the Black Film: Then & Now Film Series, and is rated R. This screening is free to the public.

On Oct. 31 at 7:15 p.m., The Exorcist celebrates its 50th anniversary at the Frank Banko Alehouse Red Cinema as part of The William Friedkin Tribute Series. This iconic film has been scaring audiences since 1973 with many fans and critics still calling it the scariest movie ever made. This movie is rated R.
