Carbon County Court - guilty pleas

Carbon County Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted guilty pleas from the following people:

Austin Michael Wentz, 23, of Northampton, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Mark E. Bower with driving under the influence: controlled substance, first offense; possession of a small amount of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; speeding; failure to wear a safety belt; disregarding traffic lanes; careless driving; reckless driving; and DUI: impaired ability, second offense on June 4, 2021.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of DUI: impaired ability, second offense. All of the remaining charges were dropped.

Matika ordered a drug and alcohol evaluation, a CRN evaluation to determine if there is a need for a more comprehensive drug and alcohol evaluation before sentencing Wentz at 9 a.m. Nov. 9.

Melissa Rachel Weiner, 40, of Port Jefferson, New York, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Peter Krajnak with possession of a small amount of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; operating a vehicle without a valid inspection sticker; driving an unregistered vehicle; and driving with an expired license on April 3, 2023.

She pleaded guilty to the marijuana charge; all remaining charges were dropped. Matika fined her $150 and ordered her to pay court costs.

Marquis Michael Vargas, 28, of Lehighton, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Joseph J. Campano with possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct on April 22, 2023.

He pleaded guilty to the conduct charge; the marijuana charge was dropped. Matika fined him $150, ordered him to pay court costs and to pay a $100 LiveScan fee.

Scott A. Pitman, 55, of White Haven, was charged by Kidder Township Police Officer Jacob E. Dinkelacker with making repairs to or selling an offensive weapon on May 26, 2022.

He pleaded guilty, and Matika ordered him to pay court costs and to pay a $100 LiveScan fee; serve one year on probation; submit a DNA sample and pay the $250 fee and undergo a mental health evaluation.

Brittany Ann Kehlenbeck, 36, no address given, was charged by Franklin Township Police Officer David M. Roberts with two counts of possession of a controlled substance; five counts of possession of drug paraphernalia; driving with a suspended license; driving without a license; and driving while her license was suspended or revoked on July 20, 2022.

She pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance and driving while her license was suspended or revoked. The remaining charges were dropped.

Matika ordered her to pay court costs and fined her $200 on the license charge, and placed her on probation for one year, ordered her to pay court costs, undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, pay a $100 LiveScan fee and a $50 monthly supervision fee on the substance charge.

Corey David Jones, 36, of Bethlehem, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Mathew J. Lento with obstructing administration of law; resisting arrest; possession of a controlled substance; and possession of drug paraphernalia on Dec. 14, 2022.

He pleaded guilty to the obstruction and paraphernalia charges. Matika ordered Jones to pay court costs and a $100 LiveScan fee; serve one year on probation; render 50 hours of community service; and undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations on the paraphernalia charge.

On the obstruction charge, he ordered Jones to pay court costs; a $100 LiveScan fee; a $50 monthly supervision fee; serve one year on probation; and render 50 hours of community service.

Mark C. Binder, 36, of Nesquehoning, was charged by Lehighton State Trooper Zachary T. Andress with possession of a controlled substance; harassment and disorderly conduct on June 29, 2022.

He pleaded guilty to the controlled substance charge; the remaining charges were dropped. Matika ordered Binder to pay court costs; a $100 LiveScan fee; a $50 monthly supervision fee; serve six to 23 months in prison, with credit for 76 days served and to be served concurrently to a sentence in Lehigh County; and to undergo a drug and alcohol evaluation.

The judge noted that Binder is subject to a pre-parole plan that involved inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
