Mahoning Valley fire co. holds annual carnival
The Mahoning Valley Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 held its Celebration of Community Old Fashioned Carnival on Saturday.
There was a lot of fun for the whole family, according to Mahoning Fire Chief Jay Michalik.
“We have funnel cakes, waffles and ice cream, the Sword Tag Society is here, and lots of games for the kids. We have the corn hole tournaments today, and lots of vendors inside, too,” he said.
The day also included a basket auction with more than 200 items, the Fire 5K Race & 1 Mile Walk, a vendor and craft fair, plus games for the children, and a bounce house.
There was plenty of delicious food from food vendors like the Mahoning Valley Fire Company Kitchen, Rita’s, Parryville Fire Company, Kitty Kat Concessions, and Mahoning Valley 4H, and others.
One special event for the children was the Kids Firefighter Challenge.
Children had a chance to wear a uniform similar to firefighters and work their way through an obstacle course carrying fire hoses, using an ax, and using a fire hose to put out simulated fires in a model of a house.
“All children participating are registered; and, at the end of the day, one name would be selected to win an actual fire helmet from the fire company,” said firefighter Brian Pollack.
Layne Roberts from Colossal Radio provided entertainment and a live broadcast.
The 5K route was changed from last year because of recent rains and some areas being washed out. Proceeds from the run go to Dylan and Gavin’s Rainbow.
The top men’s finisher was James Scifers in 21:38. The top woman was Leah Tumbiolo of Tamaqua in 29:33.
“On behalf of all the volunteers in this community,” Michalik said, “thanks for coming out.”
