Community help needed to care for 4 Great Danes

The late Mark Boyle’s life revolved around his adored family, his thriving business, and his beloved Great Danes, Shadow, Lola, LuLu, and Lacey.

Boyle, 35, was killed on Aug. 2 when he was deliberately run over by a customer who refused to pay his bill to Boyle’s welding business in West Penn Township, according to police.

Boyle’s widow, Elizabeth, is struggling through her grief, working hard to help their young daughters cope while also keeping Mark T. Boyle Welding LLC going.

And his Great Danes are now happily settled into the homes of two good friends.

Boyle’s Great Danes were very much “his” dogs, said friend Amy Gilbert Hochberg-Paules of West Penn Township.

She and Boyle got to know each other through a mutual fondness for the big dogs, she said.

Elizabeth Boyle is unable to keep them, and it was important for her to know her late husband’s dogs have good homes.

Hochberg-Paules has Great Danes of her own, and has adopted Shadow, who is about 12 years old.

Another friend has LuLu, Lacey, and Lola.

“I was friends with Mark. We had the Danes in common, he loved them so much,” Hochberg-Paules said. “He took in two 12-year olds from me last year after their owner passed away.”

Those dogs were Shadow and Izzy, who has since passed away.

A friend of Hochberg-Paules, Janine Kressler, posted on Facebook for donations to help Hochberg-Paules and the other friend who is caring for the other three dogs.

The help is needed, Kressler posted.

The older dogs need vet care, and the youngest, who will eventually be up for adoption, needs to be spayed and have eye surgery.

“Shadow is almost 13 and has outlived two owners. Amy is keeping (her) so (s) he isn’t bounced around anymore. She needs regular vet care, including flea/tick/heartworm prevention meds and a nail trim.

“Lulu is 11 years old and has cancer. She needs a vet visit and meds to be pain-free, and will eventually need euthanasia and cremation when it’s time.

“Lola is 9 years old and needs a regular vet visit, along with flea/tick/heartworm prevention meds.

“Lacy is 4. She needs to be spayed and needs surgery on both eyes. She’ll also need flea/tick/heartworm prevention meds,” Kressler posted.

“All of the folks who are helping have their own dogs to care for. They really need some help with the cost of vet care and maintenance for Mark’s dogs,” she wrote.

“If you can help with the cost of caring for these four dogs who have found themselves without their owner and their home, please send your donation to Amy via Paypal (Friends and Family option only) at Rescuer18218@yahoo.com.

“Any amount is appreciated,” Kressler wrote.

Hochberg-Paules said everything she receives is shared with Boyle’s other friend who is caring for LuLu, Lacey, and Lola.

Any donations - food, supplies or money - is “shared equally with the other dogs,“ Hochberg-Paules said.

“I took dry dog food to the farm, cases of canned food, and Fresh Pet over last week. I just ordered them all flea and tick collars and some other things that they need,” she said.
