Carbon office repairs to begin

Repairs to the Carbon County Administration Building that were caused by a leak several months ago will begin Monday.

On Thursday, Commissioner Rocky Ahner announced that CMG of Easton will begin the repairs and make them floor by floor. All three floors of the building were affected after a toilet water line broke on the third floor of the building and seeped through the building.

Work will take place from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Saturdays as needed to complete the painting.

“They explained everything to all the employees on the first floor on how it’s going to work and they have a pretty good plan,” Ahner said, noting that affected offices may need to work remotely for a day if needed, but most work will be completed after hours.

The cost for the repairs, which will be covered by PCoRP, the county’s insurance company, is approximately $205,067.

The issue began in April after the county was alerted to the leak. Several offices, including the county controllers, tax offices and more were affected.

It was the first of three leaks in a two-week period in county-owned buildings.

Another leak was reported on the first floor in the new 44 Susquehanna St., Jim Thorpe building, but damage was minimal; and a leak was reported in the basement area of the new 525 Iron St., Lehighton building during construction, which allowed for a larger potential problem to be identified before construction in the building was completed.
