JT plans fire dept. upgrade

Jim Thorpe Borough hopes to land a nearly $45,000 grant to cover new equipment as well as a window replacement for its municipal fire department.

Council on Thursday approved applying for the grant, which is through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner.

Pennsylvania Act 104 was signed into law on Nov. 3, 2022. It established the intent to provide a source of capital funding, fireworks tax money, for fire departments of local municipalities.

“We’re looking to upgrade our hydraulic rescue tools at the Onoko station which date back to 2004-06,” Councilman Mike Yeastedt said. “They are currently all hydraulic hose and require pumps so you can’t take them inside buildings. It’s difficult to get to some locations when you have to drag hoses and pumps down a hill.”

The fire department is hoping to get battery operated rescue tools to go along with a new rescue truck arriving at Onoko in September.

Part of the grant money would also go toward replacement of the bay windows at the Diligent station.

“We’re trying to keep those windows historic in nature,” Yeastedt said. “That is going to require the talents of a woodworker to reframe them and make them double paned. Then we’ll have the insulation value, but retain the same look that is there now.”
