Nigerian play to be performed in Jim Thorpe

Ibiyinka Alao, art ambassador from Nigeria, will present his musical play based on his life.

“My Fireflies,” will be shown this weekend at the Mauch Chunk Ballroom.

Located at 41 West Broadway, Jim Thorpe, the ballroom will welcome guests at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There is a cost to attend. Children ages 9 and under are free.

“My Fireflies” is a film set in West Africa. Growing up, Ibi loved to catch fireflies. This movie explores how that childhood activity showed him the true meaning of love as an adult.

Alao’s artwork will also be on display.

Alao is known to the area, coming to Jim Thorpe for the last decade and serving as the artist in residence in the Jim Thorpe Area School District.

He has celebrated Black History Month with his artwork at Dimmick Memorial Library and has worked with high school students to put on “My Fireflies: The Musical.”

The performance at Jim Thorpe High School was a small part of the entire play, which is composed of 17 stories, featuring actors, dancers, singers, and more, all of which will be shown at Alao’s shows this weekend.
