Snow White on stage Friday night at PVMS

The Pleasant Valley Middle School Musical Theater Club will perform “Snow White and The Prince” this weekend in the middle school gymnasium.

The show will take the stage at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.

“I like this show, because it is witty and unique and showcases the talent of our amazing students,” said Rhonda Sawyer, a teacher at PVMS and director of the musical. “The show was ideal for incorporating sixth through eighth grade, because it is age-appropriate, witty, and has a vocal score that students at this level can handle.”

In the show, Snow White is a princess who is preparing for her birthday ball and dreams of meeting a charming prince, which indeed she does. Its love at first sight for Snow White and Prince Phillipe, but the evil, jealous and vain Queen has other plans for the fair beauty.

Snow White escapes the palace and flees into the forest. There she meets the seven dwarfs.

In addition to the characters of the classic tale, this version has a few more: a shrewd but kind butler named Rupert, a loving nursemaid, a Magical Mirror, a royal court and some forest animals.

“From the second I read the script, I knew I was going to go out for the show,” said Harrison Sullivan, a sixth-grader who plays the part of the Magical Mirror. He said he liked the plot of the story and the sarcastic comments his character says.

Eighth-grader Alayna Boland, who plays the part of Snow White, said her character is energetic and bubbly like the one portrayed in other productions, but kind of different, too, because she helps to fight the evil queen.

“That’s not typically something Snow White would do. It’s kind of out of her character, but in her character in the show,” Boland said. “She’s kind of had it with the queen.”

Sixth-grader Kora Wills, who plays the part of the evil queen, doesn’t deny her character is the villain, but admits it’s fun playing the “bad guy.”

“You get to release some anger,” she said. “I like to consider myself a pretty nice person. It’s definitely a different experience to do something super different from my personality.”

Eighth-grader Sam Lowell said he’s happy to be playing an all-around good guy who’s in love. He played the part of Gaston in the school’s production of “Beauty and the Beast” and didn’t much like his overbearing character.

In addition to the actors, PVMS students also serve in stage crew for the production and handle costumes, lighting and props.

Director Rhonda Sawyer said she hopes the audience leaves the show impressed with the students’ talents.

“Every actor, actress and stage crew member in the show are incredible,” Sawyer said. “They are all my favorite.”
