Local Roundup: Results from April 22-23

It was a successful Saturday for all three Colonial League softball teams that participated in the CL Play Day at Pate’s Park.

Northern Lehigh edged Catasauqua, while Palmerton and Northwestern both cruised to wins.

The Panther Valley baseball and Pleasant Valley girls lacrosse teams both stayed undefeated, while the Palmerton boys track team took first at the Zephyr Invitational.

SOFTBALL

Salisbury-Palmerton

Palmerton opened Saturday’s Colonial League Play Day at Pate’s Park with a convincing 15-0 victory over Salisbury.

The Blue Bombers, who moved to 9-5 overall and 7-4 in the league, scored all their runs in the opening inning.

Carly Gaffney pitched a three-inning no hitter, while Sydney Frantz finished with three hits - including a double and a grand slam.

Kelsey Balliet added two doubles and four RBIs, while Cadee Munjone collected a pair of hits and three RBIs.

The loss dropped the Falcons to 1-13 overall and 0-10 in the league.

No. Lehigh-Catasauqua

Kylee Snyder’s fielder’s choice RBI in the top of the eighth inning lifted Northern Lehigh to a 9-8 victory over Catasauqua in a Colonial League Play Day game at Pate’s Park.

Cadence Peters started the winning rally with a single and scored the eventual game-winner.

Kaitlyn Stock finished with three hits for the Bulldogs, who forced extra innings by scoring two runs in the seventh. Snyder added two hits and scored a pair of runs.

For the Roughies, Nayeska Miranda collected four hits (including two double), two runs and two RBIs.

Northern Lehigh upped its overall mark to 8-5 and its league record to 6-5. Catty slipped to 5-8 and 3-8.

Notre Dame-Northwestern

Emma Freeman pitched a six-hit shutout and Northwestern used a seven-run fourth inning to help post a 10-0 Colonial League Play Day victory over Notre Dame at Pate’s Park.

Freeman didn’t issue any walks and struck out seven.

Marissa Christman, Abby Dunstan and Izzy Akelaitis all had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers. Both hits by Akelaitis were doubles, while Dunstan had a homer and Christman had a double.

Rylee McGinley also finished with a double, two runs and two RBIs.

Northwestern improved to 12-2 overall and 9-2 in the league. The Crusaders fell to 5-8 and 3-7.

Executive Ed.-Weatherly

Madyson vonFrisch pitched a no-hitter and struck out 17 to lead Weatherly to a 4-0 non-league victory over Executive Education.

vonFrisch also delivered a single and scored a run for the Wreckers.

The winners received a hit and RBI from Anastasia Bloom, while Juliette Bartel added a hit and a run.

Weatherly improved to 7-4.

Pleasant Valley-Easton

Pleasant Valley broke a scoreless tie Sunday with five runs in the fifth inning and went on to defeat Easton in an EPC Showcase game at Creekview Park.

Sam Ratti had two doubles and an RBI for the Bears, while Danica Getz added a pair of hits and an RBI. Brianca Pridham contributed a double, run and two RBIs.

Winning pitcher Kailyn Getz scattered seven hits and a walk, striking out seven.

PV improved to 7-8 overall and 6-7 in the league.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Pottsville scored in every inning en route to a 13-3 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Jade Weiss paced the Crimson Tide with three hits, two runs and three RBIs. One of her hits was a double.

The Olympians received a triple, a run and an RBI from Allie Skrimcovsky. Thorpe’s Melina Schwartz and Oleksa McAndrew both added a hit and a run, while Amanda Goodchild contributed a hit and an RBI.

Pottsville, winners of three straight, is now 7-6 overall and 4-3 in the league. The Olympians fell to 1-11 and 0-7.

Notre Dame ES-Panther Vy.

An eight-run sixth inning by Notre Dame East Stroudsburg put the finishing touch on its 16-5 non-league victory over Panther Valley.

DeFabo finished with four hits, two of them doubles, and three RBIs for the Spartans.

For PV, Mikayla Yuricheck had two hits - one a double - and an RBI. The Panthers also received a single and an RBI from Megan O’Brien, and a double from Morgan Orsulak.

Panther Valley dropped to 5-8, while Notre Dame is now 5-4.

BASEBALL

Salisbury-Palmerton

Timely hitting and solid pitching helped Palmerton gain a 7-5 Colonial League victory over Salisbury.

Daniel Lucykanish delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning and Derek King did the same an inning later to stake the Blue Bombers to a lead.

Lucykanish finished 3-for-3, while King went 2-for-3.

Winning pitcher Luke Netznik tossed five innings, allowing just four hits and one unearned run. He walked three and struck out three.

For the Falcons, Jake Zellin had two hits and two RBIs.

Palmerton improved to 9-4 overall and 7-4 in the league. Salisbury is now 7-7 and 6-5.

Notre Dame ES-Panther Vy.

A 10-run first inning propelled Panther Valley to a 13-3 non-league victory over Notre Dame East Stroudsburg.

The mercy rule win kept the Panthers undefeated at 13-0.

Michael Pascoe had two hits, two runs and three RBIs for PV. Hayden Goida added a hit and two RBIs, while Cody Orsulak contributed a hit and two runs.

Fourteen different Panthers either had a hit, scored a run, knocked in a run, or reached base via a walk.

Trey McAndrew gained the pitching decision, allowing three hits and just one earned run in three innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.

Tamaqua-ES South

Tamaqua’s Nate Fannock pitched a two-hitter to lead the Blue Raiders to a 2-0 non-league victory over East Stroudsburg South.

Fannock needed just 73 pitches to complete the shutout, walking none while striking out six.

Tamaqua scored the only run it would need in the third inning when Lucas Kamant tripled and came home on a throwing error. The Raiders added an insurance run in the fifth. Cian McLaughlin doubled, stole third and scored on another throwing error.

Lucas Milot had a pair of hits for Tamaqua, which improved to 7-4.

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Jim Thorpe ended an eight-game losing streak by posting a 7-2 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Rich Strack scattered six hits and two runs over six and two-thirds innings to gain the win.

Nick Schwartz had two hits, a run and an RBI for the Olympians, while Chip Baldassano added a hit and knocked in a pair.

The winners also received a hit and a run from both Jack Edwards and Cole Lazorick, and a hit and an RBI from Ian Henkels.

Thorpe is now 3-10 overall and 2-5 in the league. The Tide fell to 0-12 and 0-7.

MMI Prep-Weatherly

Weatherly jumped out to an early lead but couldn’t maintain it, as MMI eventually pulled away for a 13-2 non-league victory.

The Wreckers took a 2-0 advantage in the first inning. Ian McLaurin and Jack James both walked and scored, as Tanner Hinkle and Dylan Buck delivered base hits.

Lex Lispi finished a double shy of the cycle for MMI, collecting a single, triple and home run, while teammate Ty McDermott needed a homer to complete the cycle - ending with a single, double and triple.

The loss dropped Weatherly to 3-10.

TRACK

Zephyr Invitational

Palmerton had a strong showing at Whitehall’s Zephyr Invitational as the boys took first place and the girls finished second.

The Northwestern girls ended third at the event, which featured 14 schools.

The Bombers’ Nataly Walters won two events, taking the long and triple jumps. Teammate Natalie Mosier added a first in the 800, while the 3200 relay team also won.

Palmerton’s Emma Snyder and Northwestern’s Faith Yost were part of a four-way tie for first in the high jump. Yost, meanwhile, also ran to a victory in the 100 hurdles.

The Tigers also received firsts from Sadie Fenstermaker (shot put) and Katie Brensinger (discus).

The Bomber boys used depth to win the Invitational, earning 101 points to runner-up Dieruff’s 86 1/2. Palmerton won only one event, taking the 3200 relay.

Blue Mountain Invitational

The Jim Thorpe boys and girls took first place in the team standings at Friday’s Blue Mountain Invitational.

The Olympian boys totaled 144 1/2 points, easily topping second place Northwestern, which finished with 81. The Thorpe girls edged host Blue Mountain, 119-108, to earn the title. There were 13 schools participating in the boys competition, with 12 in the girls.

Kaila O’Connor paced the Jim Thorpe with three individual firsts. O’Connor captured the 100, 200 and 300 hurdles. She also ran a leg of the winning 1600 relay team. The Olympians’ Celia Rodriguez-Gonzalez also turned in multiple wins, taking the 1600 and 3200. She also participated on the winning 3200 relay team.

Thorpe also received firsts in the girls competition from Nicole Carroll (400), Aubrey Bonner (800), Aurora Van Auken (100 hurdles) and Katrin Cavanaugh (pole vault).

Other area athletes to win events in the girls event included Northern Lehigh’s Zoe Hathaway (high jump) and Caitlin Kirk (discus), and Northwestern Faith Yost (long jump).

The Olympian boys, who won both the 1600 and 3200 relays, received individual firsts from Zeeshan Issifu (400), Ridge Snyder (800), Ryan Bailor (1600), Justin Yescavage (110 hurdles), James O’Neill (pole vault) and Rowan Melber (javelin).

Northern Lehigh’ Izaiah Ramos also won the triple jump, while Northwestern’s Colin Myers took the discus.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Valley-Perkiomen Valley

Devon Bush and Rylee Rath both had five goals to help Pleasant Valley record a 12-6 non-league victory over Perkiomen Valley.

Bush also added an assist as the Bears remained undefeated at 12-0.

The winners also received two goals from Olivia Iandoli, while goalie Abygail Borger made four saves.

BOYS LACROSSE

North Pocono-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley cruised to a 12-2 non-league victory over North Pocono.

The Bears are now 6-7.

PV also won the JV game, 7-0.

BOYS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Notre Dame ES

Notre Dame East Stroudsburg earned a 4-1 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Jaxson Gehris gained a straight-set win at No. 1 singles for the Olympians.
