Man sentenced on assault charges after Carbon incident

A Monroe County man pleaded guilty in Carbon County Court to charges stemming from an incident in 2020.

Barry Nelson George, 65, of Blakeslee, was charged by state police at Lehighton with aggravated assault by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, driving without a license, driving while his operating privileges were suspended or revoked, driving while his license was suspended or revoked and refusing chemical testing; failing to obey a stop sign; careless driving; reckless driving, and failing to use a safety belt - driver and front seat occupant, after an incident on July 6, 2020.

Carbon County Court Judge Joseph J. Matika on March 13 accepted George’s guilty plea to the charges of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, driving while his license was suspended or revoked and refusing chemical testing; careless driving; and reckless driving.

The remaining charges were dropped in plea negotiations.

On the simple assault charge, Matika sentenced George to serve 11 to 23 months in jail; and to be released on parole at the end of the minimum sentence; to pay the costs of prosecution; to pay $3,982 in restitution to the victim; pay a monthly supervision fee of $50; submit a DNA sample and pay the $250 fee; undergo a mental health evaluation; and have no contact with the victim.

On the charge of recklessly endangering another person, Matika sentenced him to the same penalties as for the simple assault charge, with jail and probation sentences to be served concurrently.

On the charge of driving while his license was suspended or revoked and refusing chemical testing, Matika fined George $1,000, ordered him to serve 45 to 90 days in jail, to be served concurrently to the other jail time. Matika fined George $25 on the careless driving charge and $200 on the reckless driving charge.
