Carbon County inmate charged with assaulting officers

A Carbon County inmate has been charged with physically assaulting several police officers and exposing himself during the incident.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed the Weatherly Police Department in the case against Michael Allen:

While in a holding cell at the Weatherly Police Department on or about Feb. 26, Allen was combative and damaged to the holding cell air vents, door, floor, and acoustic sound dampening tiles.

Allen refused to be handcuffed for transportation to the Carbon County jail and hit an officer on the side of the face.

The holding cell door was then opened and Allen was ordered several times to turn around and place his hands behind his back to which he refused and was threatening that he was going to fight.

Allen then punched police Chief Brian Markovchick who also had his glasses ripped off. Allen then kicked Markovchick and lunged toward him, trying to grab a knife from Markovchick’s pocket.

Allen kept resisting, throwing a plastic bottle and hitting an officer in the head.

Allen then pulled his pants down and exposed himself to the officers.

Allen again started fighting, punching, kicking and striking officers before officers tased him.

Allen was handcuffed and placed in leg shackles.

EMS was then dispatched for evaluation, and Allen said he wanted to go to the hospital because his hand was hurt.

Allen was escorted out of the holding cell and while walking him to the police cruiser for transport, he spit in Markovchick’s face.

A spit hood was placed over Allen, and he was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Hazleton Campus, and was cleared by medical staff to be transported to the prison.

Allen faces charges on three counts each of aggravated assault, aggravated harassment by prisoner, and simple assault; and one count each of harassment, indecent exposure, institutional vandalism, resisting arrest.

He is in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 15 before District Judge Joseph D. Homanko Sr. of Weatherly.
