Nesquehoning native to usher at Super Bowl

A lifelong sports fan, Danny Angst landed his dream job as an usher at professional sporting events.

This Sunday, the Panther Valley native will take part in his ultimate dream gig when he ushers at the biggest sporting event in the U.S.

Angst will escort guests inside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona when the Philadelphia Eagles clash with the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.

“My duties are to welcome guests to State Farm Stadium and direct them to their seats, or to the bathroom, or to guest services,” Angst said. “Basically help people get around the stadium.”

Angst added, “I am also involved in the NFL Super Bowl week events, which includes Super Bowl opening night which will have live exclusive interviews with the stars of Super Bowl 57. There are also music events during the week (Paramore, Dave Matthews Band).”

Now a resident of Paradise Valley, Arizona, Angst said he’s ushered for the Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Coyotes, and in the spring will be ushering for the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

“The energy of the fans is incredible,” he said. “It’s just awesome to be a part of it.”

Angst said that for him, “every day is new and amazing.”

“Every day I wake up excited and happy,” he said. “It does not feel at all like a job. Every event is something different, and it’s just awesome.”

Besides doing sporting events, Angst said he also ushers at many concerts for acts such as Madonna, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Jimmie Buffett, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Kendrick Lamar, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Big Bunny.

Carbon County roots

Angst has roots in Nesquehoning, where he lived for 42 years.

A huge Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, Angst explained how he got hooked into sports.

“I became a sports fan initially while I was growing up in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, which is in the Pittsburgh area,” he said. “My dad took me to all the games around there, Pirates, the Steelers, Penguins, high school games - basically everything.”

Angst said his late father, Mickey Angst, and uncle, Roy “Bud” Angst, previously had a weekly newspaper called “The Midweeker,” for which he served as the sports editor and photographer.

“After my parents passed away, I was living alone in Nesquehoning and I thought I was ready for a big change,” he said. “I had been to visit my brother in Arizona, and I fell in love with the area. Since I have family here, it seemed the right place for me to come.”

Living out his dream

Angst moved out to Paradise Valley on July 18, where he lives with his brother and his family.

He works for all the teams in Arizona, and also roots for the Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Diamondbacks and Arizona Coyotes.

Angst explained how he was able to land the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“A couple weeks after I got out here, I used my resume and started applying for sporting events here in Arizona,” he said. “I do have a media background, which also helped with me getting my jobs because of my personality and what I did over the years.”

Angst explained how the opportunity presented itself.

“I love sports, so I started applying into a company which runs State Farm Stadium,” he said. “I went for an interview inside State Farm Stadium, that was a thrill; I got the job.”

What could be better than that?

How about the Eagles capturing their second Vince Lombardi trophy since 2018.

“I’m so happy that the Eagles got there,” Angst said. “It’s a thrill, (but) I wish it was the Eagles versus the Steelers.”

Well, at least one of out two isn’t bad.

“Fly Eagles Fly,” Angst said.
