Defendants enter guilty pleas to criminal counts

A total of nine defendants in pending criminal cases entered guilty pleas last week in Carbon County court.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:

Malachi Andrade, 23, of Weatherly, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct as a misdemeanor 3. He was arrested on Nov. 21, 2022, at a residence along Hudsondale Street. Borough police responded to the area and observed Andrade on the property, which had signs prohibiting anyone from being on the property. He was told to leave. However, a time later police went back to the property and found Andrade.

In exchange for the plea two felony criminal trespass/break-in charges were dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office.

Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment and stay off the property in question.

Christopher Glen Culkin, 35, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of disorderly conduct as a summary offense. He was arrested on May 12, 2022, by Palmerton police after causing a disturbance at the Hungarian Club along Lehigh Avenue. In exchange for the plea two misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property were dropped in a plea deal.

Matika imposed a fined of $150 and ordered restitution to the victim for $280.

Craig M. Ferber, 34, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on Jan. 13, 2022, by state police at Lehighton along Hahns Dairy Road in Lower Towamensing Township following a vehicle stop. A charge of possession of a controlled substance was dropped in a plea deal.

He was placed on probation for a year and ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service.

Christopher Detemple-McLaughlin, 21, of Lebanon, pleaded to one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He was arrested on Oct. 19, 2021, following a traffic stop along Interchange Road by Franklin Township police. He was found to have in his possession a motorcycle reported stolen. He was originally charged with 10 counts. In a plea deal a felony count of receiving stolen property was dropped.

Detemple-McLaughlin is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charges. Sentencing was deferred as he is scheduled to enter a inpatient rehab program this week.

Ted Edwin Kistler, 60, of Slatington, pleaded to one count of driving under the influence of a controlled substance. He was arrested on June 23, 2021, by Lehighton police along Route 443. He also pleaded to driving under suspension - DUI related.

Sentencing was deferred so he can obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.

Guy E. Coxe, 52, of Wilkes-Barre, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on April 26, 2022, by Beaver Meadows police along North Board and Plum streets. A charge of possession of a controlled substance was dropped in a plea deal.

Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 50 hours of community service. His plea was entered via zoom from a halfway house in Wilkes-Barre where he is a resident.

Uzair Jasim Williams, 23, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of criminal conspiracy - retail theft. He was arrested on Feb. 10, 2018, by Mahoning Township police at the Walmart store. Williams and a co-defendant were caught stealing sunglasses from the store. Police indicate five individuals were involved in the incident.

Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered he render 50 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample and stay out of the store.

Gregory Nyce Jr., 34, of Jim Thorpe, pleaded to two summary offenses of driving without a license and accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle. He was arrested on Jan. 24, 2022, by Jim Thorpe police along 15th St. He was originally charged with 10 counts.

On the license count he was fined $200 and on the accidents charge he was fined $300.

Reece Evan Heiney, 23, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of disorderly conduct as a summary offense. He was arrested on March 12, 2022, by state police at Lehighton along Forest Inn Road at the Blue Mountain Ski Resort restaurant where he caused a disturbance. In exchange for the plea two counts of simple assault were dropped.

Matika imposed a fine of $150.

Each defendant must also pay court costs of over $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee if on probation for parole.
