Nesquehoning proposes two ordinances

Nesquehoning is working to adopt two new ordinances that would address short-term rentals and property maintenance.

On Wednesday, borough council voted to advertise the two ordinances.

The property maintenance ordinance views quality of life and violations ticket process.

According to the draft ordinance, it will address the maintenance of properties, improper storage of trash, inoperable vehicles, snow removal and other issues that would contribute to the deterioration of property values and degrade from the physical appearance of the borough.

It outlines several instances where residents can be fined for not maintaining their property.

Councilwoman Abbie Guardiani also outlined the new Quality of Life fine codes, which are similar to the Notice of Violation fines.

She explained that the new fines are tiered, beginning at $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second, $200 for the third and likewise.

“The fines are increased to make people realize we aren’t kidding around,” she said. “They shouldn’t have to be told to cut your grass or shovel your snow.”

Nesquehoning also is address short-term rentals because new home rental programs provide homeowners with opportunities to rent their properties.

Under the proposed ordinance, it outlines licensing and regulation of these types of rentals within the borough.

It outlines that a homeowner must follow the ordinance, in regards to sleeping arrangements, licensing, insurance, parking and inspection.

Both ordinances are available for inspection and comment at the borough office.

They will be acted on during council’s Feb. 22 meeting.
